The story behind Tamakuku Terrace
The name Tamakuku Terrace was chosen in collaboration with our local iwi, Rangitāne o Manawatū, to honour the area's rich cultural heritage.
Tamakuku was a chief who met Whatonga, the founding ancestor from whom Rangitāne trace their ancestry, when he arrived in Manawatū. Tamakuku's influence extended throughout the Manawatū River region, from its source to its mouth, on both sides of the river.
Naming the subdivision after Tamakuku recognises and honours this important tūpuna and acknowledges the deep connection between Rangitāne and the land.
Rangitāne o Manawatū also gifted the names of the streets and reserve within Tamakuku Terrace. They are:
Te Hirawanui Drive- Te Hirawanui was a local chief who coordinated and signed the deed for sale of Te Ahu a Turanga land block (which Whakarongo is located within) and raised the children of Whakarongo after she was abducted.
Pokerekere Crescent – Pokerekere was the first husband of Whakarongo.
Tukere Crescent – Tukere was the second husband of Whakarongo.
Te Ara o Kawai – Kawai was the first wife of Koronga Whenuai and from who descended the local Wirihana and Karaitiana families.
Te Ara o Waihuri – Waihuri had two wives who descended the local Te Panau family and the Matai & Moea families.
Koa Reserve - The reserve within Tamakuku Terrace is named after Koa, the mother of Whakarongo.
The development also reflects Palmerston North City Council's street naming policy, which supports the use of te reo Māori names without the need for traditional English suffixes such as "Street", "Lane", or "Crescent" in some locations.
A community designed for growth
Whakarongo has long been recognised as an important area for future growth in Palmerston North. Its proximity to schools, parks, shopping, and the city centre made it a natural location for a thoughtfully planned residential development.
Today, Tamakuku Terrace stands as a well-established neighbourhood that contributes to the city's growing housing needs while creating a welcoming community for residents to call home.

Project completion
Veros Property Services were the Development Manager throughout the project.
Drawing on more than 25 years of property industry experience, Veros helped guide the development from planning and design through to completion. The project included the delivery of roads, underground services, stormwater infrastructure, and other essential neighbourhood amenities.
Construction commenced in January 2021. Stage 1 delivered 79 residential sections, followed by Stage 2 with a further 35 sections. The development was successfully completed in late 2025, creating a vibrant new community in Whakarongo for current and future generations.
